Who We Are

Backcountry Briefing is a daily conditions briefing service for backcountry ski operators in British Columbia, Canada. We aggregate publicly available avalanche, weather, and road data and deliver it by email each morning. We are based in Canada and operate under Canadian law, including the Canada Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL).

What We Collect

When you sign up for the briefing, we collect your name, email address, and your zone preferences (which BC zones you want included in your briefing). This information is submitted through our signup form and stored securely.

We do not collect payment information, location data, or any information beyond what is needed to deliver your briefing.

How We Use Your Information

Your name and email are used solely to send you the daily morning briefing you signed up for. Your zone preferences determine which conditions data is included in your email. We do not use your information for advertising, and we do not sell or share it with third parties.

How We Store Your Data

Subscriber information is stored in Amazon Web Services (AWS) S3, in the Canada (Central) region. AWS infrastructure is governed by AWS security standards. Your data does not leave Canada.

Email Delivery

We send email through Amazon Simple Email Service (SES). SES processes your email address in order to deliver messages. Bounce and complaint notifications are handled automatically: permanent delivery failures and spam complaints result in immediate removal from our subscriber list.

Unsubscribing

You can unsubscribe at any time by replying to any briefing email with the word STOP, or by emailing briefing@backcountrybriefing.ca. Every email also includes a one-click unsubscribe link in the message header, visible in most email clients. We will process your request promptly.

Data Retention

We retain your subscriber information for as long as you are subscribed. If you unsubscribe, your information is removed from our active subscriber list. We may retain minimal records for a short period to prevent accidental re-subscription or to comply with legal requirements.

Your Rights

You have the right to access, correct, or request deletion of your personal information at any time. To exercise these rights, contact us at briefing@backcountrybriefing.ca.

Changes to This Policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we will note the updated date at the top of this page. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
